My Mimi’s Kitchen has been very successful in the short time it has been open. They keep adding in-house made items and the latest are the strawberry, banana, blueberry and bourbon walnut pancakes with their homemade syrups. They sell their jams by the half pint and they just got in peaches so expect their peach jam to be available soon. Their cinnamon rolls you can sometimes find still warm out of the oven. Restaurant owners Julia and Chad have been planning a second restaurant which would be on the Island. It is strictly in the planning stages and there is, as of yet, no location. It will be a different concept from their current restaurant located in HEB Plus strip center in the Bluff. Whatever they come up with I am certain will be a great addition to the Island.
Roosevelt’s 1886 Restaurant serves breakfast daily 8 – 11 am. The menu includes beignets, smoked salmon on avocado toast and quiches. They are located at the Tarpon Inn in Port A at the corner of Cotter and Alister.

Fire It Ceramics in Port A is a great place to take the kids on these sweltering days besides taking them to the beach. They can be creative and take home their art piece the next day after they “fire it.” It’s also fun for adults with items like platters, pottery and coffee mugs plus they serve beer and wine. They are open daily 10 am – 7 pm and until 8 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Aerodrome Distilling in the Bluff near Naval Air Station specializes in handcrafted quality bourbon, rye, gin and rum since 2019. Their spirits have won several awards at the 2022 Las Vegas Global Spirits Competition. Owner Nathan Bitz is a retired Naval aviator and much of the decor includes air plane wings such as the bar and cocktail tables in the tasting area. There is also an outdoor patio with a view of the airfield. It is located at 401 Aviation Drive but be sure to use your GPS it is a circuitous route to get there.
Beach Bum Golf Scramble will be held at the Oso Beach Golf Course on Sunday, June 16th 1 pm and spots are filling up. The $80 includes a round of golf with cart, kegs of beer, on course contests, raffles and Hawaiian dinner. No golf shirts its Hawaiian shirts for this event. You can register online.
Island Italian is where I enjoy my favorite sandwich on the Island “The Works.” I order it with a small cup of their signature Italian dressing for extra dipping but the dressing is already on the sandwich. Their dressing is so popular they sell it for $8/16 ounces. The sandwich is on their lunch menu. For dessert enjoy one of Susan’s weekly changing selections. Owner Tony (her brother) installed a new oven a while ago just for her baking. They also carry the usual restaurant food supplier desserts that many restaurants serve which are also good but be sure to ask which are Susan’s for a special unique treat. They are closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
